Currently Co-Host of AM Northwest, Helen Raptis has lived in the great state of Oregon since the early nineties, when she was a news reporter and anchor for KVAL-TV in Eugene.  Originally from Seattle, Helen now lives in East Vancouver with her husband David and two cats, and a return to the Rose City is in the works for the very near future.

Virginia Euwer Wolff from Oregon Reads 2009: Meet the Authors Oregon Reads 2009 is a community reading program that took place in nearly every public library and in every county in Oregon during the state's sesquicentennial, January through April of 2009. Bat 6 by Virginia Euwer Wolff was selected as a title for younger readers for the Oregon Sesquicentennial. In this talk, Wolff shares some of her inspirations for the book and illuminates her writing process. At the beginning of this event, a group of sixth grade girls from Metropolitan Learning Center act out a reader's theater presentation excerpted from Bat 6.

Gabriel Boehmer from This Oregon Life: Stories About Your Oregon Experience During this program at Central Library, guest speakers and audience members joined us on statehood day, February 14, 2009, and shared why Oregon is their special Valentine.

Gabriel Boehmer is a third-generation Oregonian and author of "City of Readers: The Book Lover's Guide to Portland." His essay "Trapped in America's Most Livable City" was recently published The Grove Review: A Literary Journal. He has lived in Portland, with brief escapes, since 1964.

David Schmitke from This Oregon Life: Stories About Your Oregon Experience During this program at Central Library, guest speakers and audience members joined us on statehood day, February 14, 2009, and shared why Oregon is their special Valentine.

Formerly of KPTV's Good Day Oregon Home and Garden, David Schmitke has lived in Oregon since he started going to school at the University of Portland in 1983.  He was a news reporter at KOIN TV for several years, and met his wife, Helen, at KVAL TV in Eugene where he worked as a reporter and news anchor for eight years.  David currently lives in Vancouver, but can't wait to move back to Portland.

Ross Huffman-Kerr  from This   Oregon Life: Stories   About Your Oregon   Experience During this program at Central Library, guest speakers and audience members joined us on statehood day, February 14, 2009, and shared why Oregon is their special Valentine.

Ross Huffman-Kerr has been a professional actor in Portland for over 30 years.  Besides film, television and commercial work, he was an actor, writer and director for Storefront Theatre and a member of Tygre's Heart Shakespeare Company.

Barbara Drake from This Oregon Life: Stories About Your Oregon Experience During this program at Central Library, guest speakers and audience members joined us on statehood day, February 14, 2009, and shared why Oregon is their special Valentine.

Barbara Drake is eternally grateful to her parents for moving from Kansas to Oregon in 1941. She is the author of several books of poetry, of Writing Poetry, a college creative writing textbook widely used and in print for the past 24 years, and of Peace at Heart: an Oregon Country Life.

The William Stafford Commemorative Birthday Event at Central Library: Readings & Presentations Central Library hosted readings and presentations commemorating Oregon's late poet laureate on Sunday, January 25, 2009.

Featured participants included:

Jim Scheppke presents “William Stafford and the Oregon Poetry Collection.” Mr. Scheppke has been State Librarian of Oregon since 1991.
Ellen Louise Hart and Holly Springfield present “Where the Right Word Again Begins Time”: William Stafford and Emily Dickinson. Ms. Hart writes about Emily Dickinson's manuscripts, and about prosody and the visual line in Dickinson's poetry and correspondences. Ms. Springfield is a meditation teacher, storyteller and independent student and teacher of Emily Dickinson’s poetry and founder of the Portland Chapter of the Emily Dickinson International Society (EDIS).
Don Colburn is a health reporter for The Oregonian.
Kirsten Rian was recently nominated for inclusion in the 2008 Best New Poets anthology.
Joseph A. Soldati, host for the program, has published numerous poems and essays in a variety of literary journals and anthologies, including most recently The Litchfield Review, The Enigmatist, and Writers Dojo. His poem, “Elegy” will appear in the forthcoming (April 2009) anthology Beloved on the Earth: 150 Poems of Grief and Gratitude.
